I sure do remember fountain square from the old days, when it looked like this, I believe the photo was taken from in front of the Woolworth Dept. Store. I have a sales receipt from the Schiff’s shoe store, and I remember buying slot cars and parts from Ace Leather Toy and Hobby. I have lived in Fountain Square for sixty years now, and sometime I can’t believe how much it has changed before my very eyes. Also where the Woolworth’s Dept. Store was located in the Fountain Theater building, I use to go to the the see the Saturday Matinee and watch movies. thinking back I remember the movies being in black and white, but wow wee the cartoons were in living color, yep the Matinee was 25 cents, 40 cents if you got a coke and popcorn too.
I too lived on Grove Street in Fountain Square for many years. I used to “float” down the middle of the road when it rained and the sewers flooded. I went to the theater also… fell in love with a boy named “Rusty” and knew many many kids. The old house we called the witch house was near ours and had the largest mulberries on a tree just off of the alley. What a great place to grow up.
