If you caught our recent WISH-TV appearance, you already know the top three reasons why we think everyone should know their family’s history. But in case you missed it, let’s do a quick recap.
1. To know yourself better – As we discover who our ancestors were, we learn about ourselves and add context and meaning to our own lives. All of us have wondered at one time or another where our traits and talents come from. By looking back, we find answers to the questions that help us make sense of who we are.
2. To leave a legacy – Our efforts leave us with a legacy that we can pass on to future generations. Whether we document our history in scrapbooks, on blogs, or through diaries, we’re left with something that will remain long after we’re gone from this earth and will continue to tell our family’s story.
3. To feel connected to the people and the places around you – We are all much more connected than we realize. As you begin to discover your extended family, you’ll be amazed by how often you find “coincidences” that tie you to the people around you. And knowing that your ancestor had some connection to a building to town gives you a feeling of belonging unlike anything else.
The more you discover, the more you understand the importance of learning about your family’s history and the importance of sharing what you learn with those you love.
