Not exactly an ad, but more an invitation for the August 1889 corner stone laying ceremony for our city’s beloved Soldiers & Sailors Monument. U.S. President Benjamin Harrison spoke to the excited crowd of thousands. It ended up taking 12 years to build and is now our city’s most identifiable icon. When was the last time you visited?
No doubt it was criticized by some “fiscal conservatives” of the day as being wasteful, uncontrolled spending once cost overruns, etc., set in due to unrealistic cost estimates…and then praised endlessly once it was dedicated and opened…have definitely been impressed with the renovations of late!
