A few months ago I was cruising down Capitol and before my eyes, unfolded a sight that conjured the movie Star Wars. Was it a slick piece of modern architecture, I eyed? Perhaps a magnificent contribution to the cityscape, gracefully escorting us into what the 21st century will come to be appreciated for? Sadly…not so much. I can only hope this dispells the notion–so readily embraced these days– that new = better, ’cause, holy crapamoly, more than ever, I’m ready to hop in a time machine and head back in time. But back to the future and Star Wars…
The specific scene that came to mind is when Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi are on their way to the planet Alderaan. When they come out of light speed, the planet isn’t there. Then a short range fighter flies by and the good guys are momentarily confounded.
And here’s the scene in part:
Luke: He must’ve gotten lost–been part of a convoy or something … he’s heading for that small moon…
Obi Wan: That’s no moon. It’s a space station.
Han Solo: It’s too big to be a space station…
Luke: I have a very bad feeling about this.
Obi Wan: Turn the ship around.
Han Solo: Yeah, I think you’re right…
I had a deja vu sort of moment as I recalled that scene approaching this property:
“I have a very bad feeling about this…”
I had planned to feature this property a few weeks ago, but since a few friends posted it to their facebook pages, with lively ensuing discussion, it was dismissed. But considering we’re not all following the same pages…. may we present to you: Capitol & St. Clair streets, of the southeast corner.
It is a truly harrowing vision, undoubtedly prompting a “WTH?” at the very least.
Thankfully, the city has finally stepped in–but how this is to be corrected, I have no clue.
If only Luke Skywalker could penetrate this corner with a proton torpedo…
