I’m thinking that the house originally had two sets of double windows upstairs, and at some point an owner decided that wall space in the bedrooms was more desirable than multiple windows. I’m picturing a second window immediately to the left of the left window, and a second window immediately to the right of the right window. Note that the houses on either side of the subject house have multiple windows adjacent to one another on their upper stories.
.
I also think the roof line and gutters may have originally been continuous across the front, just below the attic dormer. I don’t understand why someone would cut out that section of the roof.
.
The front porch was probably an open porch.
.
Wouldn’t you love to remove the siding and the enclosed porch to see what’s underneath?
Definitely worth following THIS link!

Indeed, I would. I bet this was a little gem when it was first built!
